Take part in the real Memorial Day celebration
Remember the real meaning of Memorial Day while on your Florida vacation
While Memorial Day is most looked forward to for the long weekend component, don’t forget that it’s a time to commemorate fallen soldiers. While you’re enjoying your fill of barbecuing, boating, and relaxing during this three-day weekend, take the time to pay respect to families who lost loved ones fighting for our freedom. Stop and take a few moments or take part in one of many online or social media campaigns.
Thank You campaign
Military Families United and Special Ops Survivors have created the #ThankYouCampaign in an effort to raise awareness about Memorial Day’s true meaning. Although it’s launching this weekend, the campaign will be ongoing.
“Memorial Day is not about mattress sales and cook-outs,” says Hannah Gregory, campaign spokesperson. “We are working to remind people what Memorial Day is all about and that while they are enjoying the company of their families, there are many military families who are handling the loss of a loved one that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.”
It’s simple to join in.
How to Participate
Snap a “Thank You” photo and then tweet it with the hashtag #ThankYouCampaign or post it to the Facebook page. Not sure what to take a photo of? You can simply hold a “Thank You” sign (there are coloring sheets, and signs to print on the campaign’s website). If you want to get creative, think of what you are thankful for – your family, where you live – and represent that in a photograph.
How are you remembering fallen soldiers on Memorial Day?
