Meet Winter from Dolphin Tale on your Florida Vacation

Visit Winter, the dolphin whose story endeared hearts when the movie was released in cinemas this fall – she lives at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.  Now 6 years old, her story is one inspiration – upon losing her tail after being snared in a crab trap, Winter survived and learned to swim, eventually receiving a a prosthetic tail. Winter’s story is one of many at the rescue and release facility – from otters to turtles, each has a unique situation that brought them to the center. Those who cannot sustain a life in the wild, call the center their home.

Florida waters are teeming with more than 500 marine species, from hammerheads to bottle-nose dolphins.  All marine mammals are protected under federal law by the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the manatee specifically is protected under the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act of 1978, which prevents any the disruption of manatees, such as feeding and touching. There are places where you can watch marine life – just look and don’t touch!
