Go camping on your Florida vacation

When school is out, many kids go straight from the classroom to their electronic devices. June is Great Outdoors Month according to a Presidential proclamation, and the Great American Backyard Campout on June 23rd is a great way to experience all that nature has to offer and to kickstart a healthy outdoor lifestyle. The annual family event is in its 8th year and is running throughout the U.S.

Register for fun

If you register on NWF’s web site, you have the opportunity to:

  • go behind-the-scenes with celebrity naturalist David Mizejewski
  • win a trip for two to either Los Angeles or New York for a TV appearance with NWF
You can also download helpful camping information to make the experience more memorable:

  • songs and games to enjoy around the campfire
  • nature activities

Indoor vs. Outdoor

Although the the American Academy of Pediatrics is warning parents to limit screen time for young children, the average child spends over 7 hours each day in front of electronic media. A new report from Common Sense Media recently issues a report that over 50% of children in America under the age of eight spend time on mobile devices at home, and almost 33% have a television right in their bedroom. NWF’s report “The Dirt on Dirt“, indicates the many benefits to having kids outside, and is a growing reason for this annual event.

Florida Public Campouts

The Great American Backyard Campout encourages kids to experience their own backyard by camping with friends or neighbors at a large scale community camping event. There are campouts organized throughout the state. Following are public teams in Florida for the Great American Backyard Campout. Public teams are updated every week and are open for others to join.

  • St. Joe’s OR, St. Petersburg
