As part of Great Outdoors Month, we’re featuring a number of outdoor walks, educational and special events

Sing Like a Bird, Jacksonville

If you ever wonder which birds are serenading you as you’re in the outdoors, head to Little Talbot Island State Park to learn more about them. The ranger led program will help you to detect different songs and give you some backgrounder on the birds. Meet at the south beach by the multi-use trail pavilion on the island to participate in this walk.

Nighttime Turtle Walks

Seeing a nesting sea turtle is an unforgettable experience so make sure you sign up for the turtle night walk at Sebastian Inlet State Park. Following an information session on sea turtles, you’ll stroll along the beach at night and the current odds are that there is a 75% chance of seeing a nesting turtle. Make sure you’re up for the three mile walk and can stay out as long as 4 hours. This program fills up fast so make sure you pre-register as June dates are almost sold out!

  • When: June till July 2012 from 9 p.m. – 1 a.m. *Thursday is the only day the doesn’t run

Discovery Saturdays, Key West

Each month, the third Saturday is always fun filled at Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary for Discovery Saturdays. From 9:30 a.m. till 11:30 a.m., children learn about the Florida Keys’ environment and culture through play. Open for children from kindergarten to the fifth grade. This is a popular event so pre-register at (305) 809-4750.

Humongous Hurricanes, Key West

Children learn how to prepare for hurricanes and stay safe in dangerous weather conditions through game play and craft making at the Dr. Nancy Foster Environmental Complex.
