Florida Vacation Guide to “Rock of Ages” at the box office

If you were one of the few people who went out to see Tom Cruise’s new film, “Rock of Ages” this past weekend, you helped put the movie in the Number 3 spot in the box office showings, behind “Madagascar 3″ and “Prometheus.” While you were watching the movie, you probably didn’t even notice that while it’s set in California, it was filmed entirely in South Florida, mostly Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

The film’s “The Bourbon Room” is actually Fort Lauderdale concert venue Revolution Live.  A stretch of North Miami Avenue stands in for the Sunset Strip and one scene from the movie which is set at the base of the Hollywood sign was actually filmed at a landfill in Broward County.

About “Rock of Ages”

“Rock of Ages” is a star-studded musical, a screen adaptation of a stage show. If you enjoyed 1980s rock music in the day, you’ll probably enjoy this film. Through a cast of many characters, “Rock of Ages”  tells many stories set to music including the story of concert god Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise), his manager (Paul Giamatti) and the reporter from the Rolling Stone (Malin Akerman) who came between them. Other big names in the film include Bryan Cranston, Mary J. Blige, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand. Though the film does star many well-known actors, it brought in only $15.1 million at the box office on its opening weekend in addition to $4.1 million overseas.

The studio is hopeful, however, that since the musical is most likely to draw older, female crowds (a demographic that doesn’t always run out on opening weekend to see a film), that it will have some stronger showings in upcoming weekends.

Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx?

Cruise plays an aging, egotistical rock legend from the 1980s. Cruise had three hours of dance lessons and five hours of vocal coaching everyday. He also had to learn to play guitar to prepare for the role.

Cruise states he was encouraged to take the role by his musical-loving family; wife Katie Holmes and their six-year-old daughter Suri.
