Every day is a field trip at Sanibel Sea School
Florida Vacation Guide: Give your kids an unforgettable experience at Sanibel Sea School
If you’re planning a vacation at the South Seas Resort in Captiva, Florida, and you’re looking for a fun experience for your children to help fill up their days, get them enrolled in a camp with Sanibel Sea School. If you’ll be vacationing elsewhere in Sanibel, or if you live in southern Florida and want to give your kids the summer schooling of a lifetime, this could also be your ticket.
At Sanibel Sea School, as their tagline suggests, every day is a field trip.
What is Sanibel Sea School?
Sanibel Sea School is a non-profit organization committed to fostering a lifelong love of the ocean in children ages 6-13. The hope is that when a young child makes that special connection to the sea, it will stay with him or her so that when they grow up, it will be a natural thing for them to be concerned about caring for and conserving our oceans.
There are two locations in Florida; the flagship campus is located at the eastern end of Sanibel Island, near Sanibel Lighthouse, and the other is located in Captiva on the South Seas Resort.
What do kids learn at Sanibel Sea School?
The ocean is a world of discovery and as a civilization, we’ve not even scratched the surface of everything that’s out there to be explored. Through Sanibel Sea School, children are encouraged to be curious and to discover. There are two subjects of study each day; one in the morning, followed by lunch and an afternoon session. The sessions are generally held out in the field right in the environment that’s being studied about.
What better way is there to learn about osprey than to see one eating a fish it caught for lunch, right in front of your eyes? Why would you want to learn about plankton in a classroom when you can collect it and study it on a boat? At the end of the day, each camper receives a certificate and a deeper appreciation and understanding of the sea.
