When traveling through Florida, make sure you visit the unique collections of art and artifacts that have historic, artistic and cultural significance.
Ringling Museum of Museum, Sarasota
Originally built by John Ringling for his personal art collection, the Ringling Museum of Art now displays paintings and sculptures by the European Masters including Rubens, Velázquez and Tintoretto. Don’t miss Ringling memorabilia and artifacts in the Circus Museum and make sure you walk through the 27,225 sq. ft. Rose Garden with more than 1,200 rose plants.
Erotic Art Museum, Miami
According to Naomi Wilzig, Miami was the only North American city that granted an operating license for an Erotic Art Museum, so she opened it on Miami Beach. The 12,000 square foot gallery is filled with erotic art that spans the globe, from a Haitian voodoo fertility fetish to a bronze statue of satyr holding a nymph, educational artifacts to whimsical folk art, tapestries to sculptures. There are also some unique furniture pieces, including a wooden phallic poster bed. You can walk through the rooms till midnight.
Dali Museum, St. Petersburg
Double the size of the previous museum, now Salvador Dalí’s work is displayed in a building that suits his art. With more than 900 triangular-shaped glass panels, the Dali Museum‘s geodesic glass dome is unique to North America and features a spiral to access third floor galleries. Spanish cuisine is on Café Gala’s menu and visitors have a great view of Tampa bay from the Avant Garden where they can walk the hedge labyrinth.
