Florida Vacation Guide to Celebrity News: Justin Bieber in Florida for Pencils of Promise
Any Boca Raton teens attending St. Andrew’s School surely have a new perception of Friday the 13th if they felt it an unlucky date on the calendar before today. That’s because the ultimate heart throb of this generation – Justin Bieber himself – made a special visit to that school to congratulate three siblings who have raised a tremendous amount of money for one of his favorite charities.
The charitable siblings
Briana Finocchiaro (age 12) and her twin siblings, Angelia and Nicolas (age 9) raised $51,738 for Pencils of Promise by asking friends, family members and neighbors to donate money to the cause.
What is Pencils of Promise?
Pencils of Promise was founded in 2008 by Adam Braun (days before he turned 25 years old). He was inspired by a young boy he encountered in India. When Braun asked the little boy what he wanted most, the boy’s answer moved him when he replied with, “a pencil.”
Braun had been backpacking across the world at the time and he started giving away pencils and pens to children and their parents. He was driven to help and he started by trying to motivate other members of the “millennial generation” (those aged 18-29) to help him in his efforts to give children access to basic education.
The rest of the story is quite remarkable. With a $25 investment he created Pencils of Promise and started fundraising. In the first year of the nonprofit’s operation, it built three schools which is astonishing when you consider the majority of the donations received are in increments of $15 and $25 at a time.
To date, Pencils of Promise has built more than 25 schools all over the world in countries such as Laos, Nicaragua and Guatemala.
Justin Bieber in full support of Pencils of Promise
Bieber has been a very big supporter of Pencils of Promise. He agreed to visit schools like St. Andrew’s that come together to help support it as well.
Bieber’s event was held today at St. Andrew’s School from 1 to 2pm. Parents and members of the media were not able to attend the presentation.
We can’t help but wonder…
Rumor has it that Bieber’s girlfriend Selena Gomez might also be in Florida right now. If you spot them, leave a comment and give us the scoop!
Would you rally with your classmates to raise money for Pencils of Promise if it meant Bieber might visit your school?
