Florida Travel News: Rare art collection calls Disney World Home

An assortment of fine art and other collectables will be coming to the Walt Disney World Resort in late winter 2013. It’s an interesting departure from most of the attractions at the theme parks but the art pieces represent a virtual history book of a particular era in America and it gives voice to many untold stories.

The New Home

The Kinsey Collection, will be housed in the American Heritage Gallery in the American Adventure pavilion at Epcot. The image shown above is from 1951, created by the artist Hughie Lee-Smith, displaying some of sentiments of the collection - determination, courage, hope and inspiration. Viewing this collection is included with admission to Epcot.

The Art Collection

This February, the Kinsey Collection will preview during African-American Heritage Month and then will open in March 2013. The collection encompasses the personal treasures of Bernard and Shirley Kinsey amassed from their travels to 90 countries. The collection marks African-American art and history and some pieces date back to the 17th century. What’s unique about the collection is that it’s a blend of art and history with more than 40 pieces of art including:

  • artifacts
  • documents
  • books
  • sculptures
