From hiking at moonlight to endangered mammals, here are the best of outdoor events this week in Florida:

1. North Atlantic Right Whales

This is a special time in Florida, from December until March when one of the world’s most endangered large mammals come to Northeast Florida to give birth to their calves in warmer waters. You can learn all about North Atlantic right whales when you join a ranger  at the Ribault Club on Fort George Island CulturalState Park. No reservations are necessary and the program is free.

2. Full Moon Beach Hike

There’s nothing like walking by the light of the moon rather than a flashlight. You can head out to the beach with Ranger Tony on a moonlight hike at Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area by Flagler Beach. If you’re interested in the walk (it will be under a mile long), meet on time at the the beachside day use pavilion as the moonrise is set for 5:04 p.m.

3. Geocaching Workshop

Learn a new skill in this new year by discovering the art of geocaching and how to use GPS in this introductory workshop at Dade Battflefield Historic State Park. All workshop materials are included in the afternoon.

  • Highlight: Learn how to use GPS
  • When: Saturday, January 19th, 2013. 10 am to 1 pm
  • Where: 7200 County Road 603, Bushnell, Florida 33513
  • Cost: $3/ car load (maximum of 8 people) or use an annual park pass
