Florida Travel Guide: Lance Armstrong wins the Ironman 70.3

Seven-time Tour de France champion, Lance Armstrong, won the 2012 Ironman 70.3 Florida at Lake Eva Park in Haines City today. The half triathlon is a 1.2-mile swim, a bike course of 56-miles and wraps us with a 13.1-mile run. On this hot, windy day, nothing stopped Armstrong once he got on his bike! He finished his swim in 24:52, then pedalled past everyone to gain a significant lead with 2:01:13 on his bike, and completed the run at 1:15:56 to win the race at 3:45:38.

The Race

When Armstrong emerged from the water he was in fourth place but he blitzed past everyone on his bike. Once Armstrong got on his bike, he left everyone else far behind, staying true to his reputation. He quickly closed the gap with those ahead of him, and within three miles his lead had grown by more than a minute.  By Mile 38.5 he was leading 6:05 at an average speed of 28.71 mph. , he was 6:05 up by Mile 38.5. From there on, his steady pace grew faster and when entered the run he had a 10 minute lead which landed him a 3:45:38 win.

Lance Armstrong

This is the fourth half triathlon that Armstrong has competed in during the last three months. He finished second in Panama, seventh place in Texas and third in St. Croix.
