As you travel through Florida this weekend looking for fun things to do without spending wads of cash, check out these free Florida festivals taking place throughout the state.

1. Downtown Tarpon Festival

The World’s Richest Tarpon Tournament has returned to Boca Grande after a 5-year hiatus. Even if you don’t care to fish for tarpon, there’s a great, festive atmosphere to enjoy. Take in presentations by the Mote Marine Mobile Aquarium while the children are entertained by games. There’ll also be fishing talks and music by Colton James on Saturday at 8pm.

  • Where: Park Avenue, between 5th and 3rd St., Boca Grande.

2. Downtown Sarasota Craft Festival

Take a stroll through 100 or so craft booths in downtown Sarasota if you’re hoping to find that perfect unique treasure to complete your home decor, or that fashion accessory you know is out there waiting for you. You can expect to find everything from jewelry and soaps to home accessories and art.

  • Highlight: Handmade crafts.
  • When: May 19-20, 10 am – 5 pm
  • Where: Main Street, Sarasota.
  • Cost: Free

3. Newberry Watermelon Festival

Hog calling, watermelon seed spitting and watermelon eating. Those are some of the original events of the first Newberry Watermelon Festival that was held back in 1946. Really, who doesn’t like a good watermelon eating contest? Take the whole fam-damily to this great festival and enjoy all the free watermelon you can eat. Oh and don’t forget to check out the “Big Melon” competition.
