Florida News: St. Augustine Nights Of Lights starts November 17
It’s almost time to start decorating for the holidays. If you’re traveling through Northern Florida this month and you’d like some inspiration for your seasonal decor, make a point of driving through St. Augustine anytime after 6:30pm on November 17. That’s when the lights will be turned on in the country’s oldest city for the 19th season of Nights of Lights.
St. Augustine’s Nights of Lights event
Since 1994, this 10-week seasonal event happens with the flick of a switch by former mayors and city officials on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The ceremonious turning on of the lights is known as Light Up! Night and it is considered to be one of the Southeast’s major events of the Christmas season.
Light Up! Night is set to take place in Plaza de la Constitucion at 6:30pm on November 17th. The lights will stay on until January 31, 2013.
Seeing St. Augustine transformed into a city of sparkling light is simply magical, setting a special holiday atmosphere. Who needs snow for the holidays when you can have millions of twinkling lights?
Origins of the event
A city over 446 years old is sure to have a story to go along with any event and this one can be traced back to a Spanish tradition of displaying a lighted white candle during the Christmas season. Whatever the reason, Nights Of Lights certainly provides a beautiful setting for the holidays.
