Florida News: Florida celebrity helps raise awareness for Florida’s endangered species

One of Florida’s favorite singers is working with Save the Manatee to draw attention to these unique and endangered mammals that live in Florida. Jimmy Buffet founded the Save the Manatee Club (SMC) in 1981 along with former U.S. senator Bob Graham and is still supporting the organization with this public service announcement and serving as co-chair of SMC. Although he doesn’t sing on the video, he narrates the high definition footage by videographer, Tracy Colson.

Help Protect Manatees

There are many ways that the public can get involved to help protect manatees, from adoption programs to recycling plastic bottles and used fishing line. You can take part in SMC’s adopt-a-manatee program, where you can select a  living manatee that matches your personality, get a background of the manatee and even have the opportunity of seeing your adopted manatee in Florida. Fund raised through this program help protect manatees and their habitat. When you adopt a manatee you receive:

  • An adoption certificate, a color photo, and biography of your Florida manatee.
  • A membership handbook
  • The Manatee Zone, SMC newsletter
  • Paddle Tales, an SMC e-newsletter

Florida Manatees

Manatees are an Endangered Species

Florida is one of the few areas in the world where you can find a manatee. There are approximately 5,000 manatees in the entire state of Florida, and otherwise the aquatic, plant-eating mammals, are found outside of the United States in either Africa, South America, Africa, or Australia. These sirenians are an endangered species, protected under the Federal Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act as well as the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act.
