It’s National Literacy Month and local authors will be starting celebrations on International Literacy Day which is on September 8, 2012. There are a number of literacy events happening in Florida parks and as long as you bring a new or good-condition used book, you get free admission into the park and the events. The donated books will be given to local libraries or put to good use in state park education centers or libraries.

O’Leno State Park

Local authors will be joined by the Gentle Carousel Therapy Horses for literacy events. Games, nature arts and crafts will hold young reader’s attention.

The Barnacle Historic State Park

Spread out a blanket under a shady tree and read a book, listen to a Read-a-long or join in the games and activities at the Barnacles, Books, Birds and Boats activity stations.

  • When: Sunday, September 9, 2012, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Where: 3485 Main Highway, Coconut Grove, Florida
  • Cost: Free with book donation

Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park

If you want to learn more about libraries, or get your own library card, volunteers from the library system will be on hand to answer questions and sign you up.

Dade Battlefield Historic State Park

Books can come alive when read out loud, but even more so, when acted. On this Saturday you can attend a puppet show, followed by a book reading and an evening walk during the Puppets ‘n Night Prowl event.
