Disney News: April Holmes is top contender for the gold this weekend

The top contender for multiple gold medals at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, April Holmes is competing in the 100 and 200 meter race this weekend – see  times below. Winner of the gold for the 100 meter race at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, the Paralympian holds the world record in the 100, 200 and 400 meter sprints.

Training at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex

Holmes trains with the former head coach for the U.S. Olympic track team, Brooks Johnson.  Since the 1968 Olympic Games, Johnson has coached athletes right up to 2008, and now continues the training at Walt Disney World. Leading up to the Paralympics, Holmes trained with track athletes David Oliver, Connie Moore, Tiffany Ross Williams and David Payne.

Off  The Track

It was in a train accident that Holmes lost her left leg and since becoming a Paralympic athlete, she has started the April Holmes Foundation. Her non-profit agency lends a helping hand to people with physical and learning disabilities by providing medical equipment, support and scholarships.

  • Saturday, September 1, 2012  at 2:33-46 p.m.: 100 Meter Semifinals
  • Sunday, September 2, 2012 at 4:32-38 p.m.: 100 Meter Finals
  • Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at 6:09-16 a.m.: 200 Meter Semifinals
  • Thursday, September 6, 2012 at 3:38-44 p.m.: 200 Meter Finals
