Disney News: Disney acquires Lucasfilm LTD

Iron Man and Buzz Lightyear, there’s a new kid on the block: Luke Skywalker. Along with Jedis, Darth Vadar and other cherished characters in Star Wars, they  will be the newest heros at Disney now that Lucasfilm Ltd. was purchased for $4 billion. In 2009, Disney purchased Marvel for $3.96 billion and in 2006, it bought Pixar for $7.6 billion. This is Disney’s third acquisition of a major studio within a ten year period.

New Star Wars movie

Along with the announcement, Disney indicated that a new Star Wars film will be released in 2015: Star Wars Episode VII and that more films will be released to grow the Star Wars saga.

Lucas Film

Lucasfilm co-chairman Kathleen Kennedy will become president of Lucasfilm under Disney and serve as Star Wars brand manager. George Lucas will be a creative consultant but since forming the company in 1971, he will retire. Disney acquires all of the subsdiaries of Lucasfilm: game company LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound.

 In a press release, George Lucas spoke of the acquisition: “For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next. It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.
