Disney News: 2012 MEAC/SWAC Challenge Events and Game Day drawns 20,000 football fans

Disney held the 8thannual MEAC/SWAC Challenge on Labor Day weekend, and thousands of fans joined Mickey and Goofy. ESPN had live coverage of the event that had the Wildcats and Hornets battling it out where Bethune-Cookman scored a 38-28 victory over Alabama State. Along with the games and celebrations, associate athletic director, Jack “Cy” McClairen and Rev. Canon Nelson W. Pinder were honored at a “legends” reception.

Football and Education

The main focus of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge is football, but the underlying message is also about the value of higher education and the importance of diversity. A range of events and workshops were held during the challenge including career path panel discussions for students from highschool, and the Legends reception which pays tribute to accomplishments by alumni from Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

“This game and the events tied to it shine a national spotlight on our region and demonstrate our support of the African American community and Historically Black Colleges and Universities,” said Belinda Frazier, senior manager of Minority Business Development for Walt Disney World Resort.

Entertainment & Celebrities

It’s the first time that a Pep Rally was held in conjunction with MEAC/SWAC and Brian Jenkins, the head coach at Bethune-Cookman started off the celebrations in at Downtown Disney. Performances and parades continued at Epcot with marching bands, cheerleaders and drill teams from various schools.
