Disney News: Eight pro teams slated for fourth annual pre-season soccer tournament

Starting February 9th, 2012, there will be eight professional soccer teams in Orlando, including six Major League Soccer (MLS) teams, taking part in the pre-season training camp at the ESPN Sports Complex and then competing, leading up to the championship game on February 23rd 2013. So far, two of eight teams competing in the 2013 Disney Pro Soccer Classic have been announced:

  • Kansas City:  (MLS) Eastern Conference top seed and 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup winners
  • D.C. United: four-time MLS Cup champions

Pre-season Training Home

For 2013, the official preseason training grounds for Sporting Kansas City will be Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. So far for this season, Kansas City has a number of accolades under its belt:

  • the best defense in MLS (no more than one goal per game(
  • Florida native, Graham Zusi, and U.S. national team midfielder is leading with 14 assists
  • representing Major League Soccer at the 2013-14 CONCACAF Champions League

Disney Soccer Events

Disney holds over a dozen soccer events at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex each year, including the Disney Cup International, the Disney Pro Soccer Classic, MAAC Men’s Soccer Championships and the Soccer Showcase. The ESPN Complex has been the preseason training home for a number of teams, such as the Atlanta Braves and for 2013, the AS Roma Football Club.
